Creating a new dialog. Architecture is plagued by an ever-increasing complexity of process. New digital tools have allowed architects to create entirely new forms with exceedingly complex computational techniques. These forms are no longer dictated by intent but rather, generative processes. Process in itself does not constitute a new architectural language, but rather new introduces new methods of informing design intent. Computational processes have created a mentality of 'everything is on the table', relinquishing control and intent to the process. It is the role of the architect to control, and insert intention back into the design process. The conversation between the digital (computational generation) and the analog (process of making) is where architects can regain or reinsert intent.
Francisco Diaz | Real Fake
The project aims to explore the realm of actuality and digital manipulation to produce a new reality suspended between the two. By first subtracting elements of an image of an all plywood room and then binding them together with distorted versions of the original images the piece aims to create discourse between real and distorted. Ostensible utilizes machine based algorithms to manipulate distorted imagery and reapplies it in a loop, back into its original context. Later with the use of transparency sheets and then projection mapping, the project was able to further explore digital manipulation of surface with machine based algorithms.
